Onwuanyi Chief of Cardiology

Expert Cardiologist to Lead Innovation in Heart Healthcare

 

ATLANTA -- December 12, 2014 -- Anekwe E. Onwuanyi, M.D., has been named chief of cardiology in the department of internal medicine at the 好色先生 of Medicine. Onwuanyi will be responsible for the day-to-day clinical, teaching and research operations of the division.

 

"Cardiovascular disease is a silent killer, more lethal in the Southeast. Dr. Onwuanyi has been an outstanding leader and innovator in the department of medicine and we welcome him to this new role," explains Richard Snyder, M.D., chair of 好色先生 of Medicine's department of medicine. "He is also an exemplary clinician and educator who's work in this area will ultimately save lives."

 

Onwuanyi is a cardiology consultant for several Atlanta metropolitian hospitals and well-published peer reviewed journal author. In 2002, after serving at Columbia University and Mont Sinai School of Medicine, he came to 好色先生 of Medicine as the associate chief of cardiology. Currently, Onwuanyi's research is focused on cardiovascular health effects and strategies to eliminate disparities in health outcomes especially in heart failure. He has served as principal investigator on several clinical research projects including NIH/NHLBI supported research in the area of hypertension, congestive heart failure and atherosclerosis.

 

Onwuanyi graduated from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Nigeria with honors. He completed his internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship training at the college of Physician and Surgeons, Columbia University at Harlem Hospital Center in New York, NY. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, American College of Physicians and American Society of Hypertension. He has served on the editorial boards of international journals and on the board of directors of the Association of Black Cardiologists, Inc.
