Community Engagement Day 2018

On Saturday, October 20, 2018 MSM partnered with the to host nearly 400 community members and a wide range of community organizations as exhibitors of services and resources related to health, education, finances, neighborhood environment, and social support services.

  • Over 42 exhibitors participated in Community Engagement Day 2018, with a turnout of nearly 400 community members
  • Nearly 400 community members attended Community Engagement Day at the Villages at Carver Family YMCA
  • The South Atlanta Fresh Market booth, led by Pamela Cooper, Manager of Recruitment and Retention Core, Clinical Research Center at MSM provides free fresh vegetables and fruit baskets to guest of Community Engagement Day
  • Bearings Bike Shop speaks with Community Engagement Day guests
  • Youth from the Villages at Carver neighborhood register for Community Engagement Day 2018
  • Author, Tanisha Hall, exhibits her book titled, Breath, discussing her journey to cope with grief after becoming a millennial widow
  • Georgia CAN provides information on how communities can take action to support changes needed to address issues facing Georgia’s kids
  • Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center exhibits educational information
  • The Suburban Black Ladies League exhibits educational information on menopause, hormones, and stress management
  • Care Source exhibits to provide information about Medicaid to Community Engagement Day guest
  • Jarrod Lockhart, M.Ed., Assistant Director, Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) Academy and Pipeline Initiatives, Office for Educational Outreach and Health Careers facilitates S.T.E.A.M. activities with youth and provides information on MSM’s pipeline programs
  • Atlanta BeltLine provides information on new trail expansions

In recognition of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and  were key partners who provided educational resources and free mammograms to increase early breast cancer detection in an effort to improve survival outcomes for African Americans in Greater Atlanta.

  • Sister by Choice mobile clinic, founded by native Georgian, Dr. Rogsbert F. Phillips-Reed, provided free mammograms to women over 40 without health insurance

In recognition of October also being American Pharmacists Month, we partnered with the who spearheaded a collaborative effort among Peachtree Pharmacy, Young Life Pharmacy, Healing Our Village Pharmacy, and Total Pharmacy to provide Community Engagement Day attendees with free flu shots.

  • ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉú of Medicine student-run H.E.A.L clinic provided flu shots, blood pressure and glucose checks
  • The You Can Win Foundation provided diabetes education information
  • Mercer University medical students provide blood pressure and glucose checks
  • Morehouse Healthcare staff provide flu shots
  • Mercer University College of Pharmacy provided blood pressure screenings and glucose checks

Additional partners such as the MSM H.E.A.L Clinic, . , ., and many others offered blood pressure screenings, glucose checks, HIV testing, and body mass index screenings.

The day also featured special guest such as , President of the Atlanta City Council and , Member of the Georgia House of Representatives, representing the 58th district. They spoke to guest and exhibitor organizations about the importance of collaborative efforts to meet community needs.

Community Engagement Day continues to be a reminder that through collective impact we continue to walk the path towards achieving our vision of leading the creation and advancement of health equity.
